Announcing The Longbox Graveyard March Madness Super Team Showdown!

March Madness is back at Longbox Graveyard!

In past years we’ve matched off sidekicks, supervillains, and even super-pets in a month-long single-elimination tournament.

This year, we’re doing … Super Teams!

Your first task is to help me set the field of sixteen teams that will join our tournament.

Please vote for up to sixteen teams from the list below (and if I’ve missed your favorite team, cast a write-in vote and let me know who it was for in the comments section of this post!)

I will take the top fourteen or so teams from your votes and seed them appropriately (leaving open a couple slots for write-ins or Editor’s Choice). Once our teams are sorted into a bracket, proper voting (and ELIMINATION!) will begin!

NOTE — It is up to you to decide the composition of each team. Groups like the Avengers, the Justice League, and the Guardians of the Galaxy cover a lot of characters and eras. I’ve made no attempt to define the membership of each team, and I’ve deliberately ignored most sub-teams (like the West Coast Avengers) … just use your best comic book judgement!

Here’s the schedule for The Longbox Graveyard March Madness Super Team Showdown!

  • Thursday, March 1st — Seeding
  • Monday, March 5th — Round of Sixteen
  • Monday, March 12th — Round of Eight
  • Monday, March 19th — Final Four
  • Monday, March 26th — Championship Match
  • Monday, April 2nd — Final Result Announced!

Don’t delay — voting for this seeding round concludes early on Sunday, March 4th!!

Vote early, and vote often! Tell your friends! (Your enemies too!)

And sound off about your favorites and your write-ins in the comments, below!

    The Ultimates
    The Watchmen

    • Champions and Watchmen are on there. I deliberately spiked the West Coast Avengers (and most non-X-Men sub-teams). The Ultimates is a good catch, I will make them your write-in and will see how soft the bottom of the bracket looks when Sunday rolls around — they might make it in.

  2. This is going to be fun!
By the way, I voted for the original Guardians of the Galaxy, not those latter day impostors. OK, the impostors are cool, too, but I’m a fan of the originals.

  3. Nuts, somehow I overlooked the JSA! 😦 Well, they still look like they’ll make it.

  4. THANK YOU for doing March Madness. These are always so much fun.

The one thing that surprised me with your list of teams is that they were only teams of heroes. None of the classic villain teams made your list. If I had a write-in, I’d go with the only team of villains I remember having their own bronze age title – The Secret Society of Super Villains.

    • I thought of you when I was kicking this off — I know you were disappointed when I skipped last year.

I considered putting villain teams in the mix, and maybe should have. There were just so many hero teams to consider that I didn’t want to crowd out any good candidates. Maybe I’ll do villain teams next year. (And I plan to do comic book monsters in October, so maybe that will get us Creature Commandos and the Agents of SHADE).

  5. actually, I missed Watchmen, can you add it in for me – also I like the suggestion of S.H.I.E.L.D, can you add that in as well even though I didn’t tick the box … or can I refresh the page and add them in myself…?
