Longbox Graveyard Sidekick Showdown March Madness — Winner Announced!
Posted by Paul O'Connor
The final votes have been cast in the Longbox Graveyard Sidekick Showdown March Madness Tournament, and your champion is …
BUCKY BARNES!!
Bucky rode a wave of last-minute Saturday votes to pull off the upset over the tournament’s top seed, Robin!
It was a see-saw week for Bucky and Robin, with Cap’s sidekick taking an early lead, before Robin settled into a seemingly-comfortable lead by mid-week. But as had been the case in previous rounds, Bucky enjoyed a Saturday Surge … maybe Bucky’s fans are like Winter Soldiers, awakening only once each week to vote for their hero?
Here’s the path Bucky took to the championship:
And so Bucky Barnes rides the perfect storm of circumstances to unlikely victory over Robin, the Boy Wonder. Just think of the odds Bucky had to overcome — from boy hostage to the idol of millions, headlining one of the biggest superhero movies of all time. A punchline no more, Bucky Barnes is the winner of the Longbox Graveyard Sidekick Showdown March Madness Tournament.
All hail the Winter Soldier!
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Tournament, both by voting here on the blog, and in stumping for your favorite candidates on Twitter. It was a lot of fun … and we’ll do it again next year, with the Longbox Graveyard SUPER-PET Showdown March Madness Tournament!
(I understand Las Vegas already has Krypto as the prohibitive favorite!)
Was the fix in? Was the tournament fair? Did your favorite candidate get jobbed? Sound off in the comments section, below!

I’m looking to put $100 on that Thor frog for next year. Anyone got a bookie taking bets on this?

Krypto looks unbeatable on paper … but that’s why they play the games! Throgg? Sure, maybe. How about the rest of the Legion of Superpets? Beppo the Super-Monkey, Streaky, that damn horse that used to be a centaur who secretly lusts after Supergirl?
Aquaman rode a seahorse, it’s gotta be in there. Ace the Bat Hound! It’s Krypto versus the field … but the field has some contenders.
See you next March!

Lockjaw would teleport Krypto to the sun, and then it’s wide open.
What about that monkey that hung out with the Wonder Twins?
Or Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew? Spider-Ham? (Do any of those even count, since they’re not sidekicks or a part of their respective “proper” universes?)

Here’s the thing — is it Superpets, or super-animals. Make it super-animals and we can include Rocket Raccoon, Howard the Duck, heck even Micky Mouse if we stretch the point.
Hmm.

If its a 64-critter bracket, its gotta be animals at large.
If its only a 16-“team” bracket, pets will do.
I’m partial to a bigger field, but either way, Dyno Mutt wants in!

Oh, the Legion of Super-Pets is a must!

Bucky? The results have been a bit too Marvel-centric for me. In whatever I’ve read with Bucky, he’s generaly struck me as a bit of a punk. Of course, it doesn’t help Robin’s case that there are about a dozen Robins to choose from.

Until DC can make a decent movie that doesn’t have Batman in it … it will remain Marvel’s world. Alas, Robin paid the price this time.

Yeah…Bucky? I’d choose Rick Jones over Bucky. I’d choose Aqualad first. Winter Soldier wasn’t even very good, kind of pedestrian…like Bucky come to think of it. Robin was integral to the batman series, had his own comic, went on to become Nightwing. I’m getting that robbed feeling just like after the 2000 election. Marvel must have sent bots to vote for Bucky! Recount! (anyway…great idea…look forward to Super-pets. Does bat mite qualify?)

Robin considered appealing the election to the Supreme Court, but for the good of the nation he elected to stand aside …

I gave Robin his second vote, but maybe I forgot to click the vote button. It looks like the young Mr. Grayson would have lost even with my tragically uncounted vote. Winter Soldier vs. Nightwing would have been a serious contest, both sidekicks far more deadly and experienced by the time they grew up.
