Mantlo is one of the unsung heroes of Marvel in the late 70s/80s … he was a great “bench” player, you could throw him into any position and he’d get the job done. He was never less than good and sometimes better than that. When you find a fill-in issue that’s unexpectedly good, it’s probably a Mantlo. And of course, when they gave him a book of his “own” — invariably one of these toy tie-ins that no one else wanted to do — Mantlo turned in some of his best work. A pro’s pro and I’m always glad to see his name on the masthead.
